The balance of points on the driver's license can vary depending on the behaviour of the driver, and can reach a maximum of 15 points. However, you don’t just earn points. If you commit an infraction, you can also lose them.

Since 2006, when the points-based driver’s licensed was first introduced, driver’s license holders have a starting balance of 12 points and 8 points in the case of new drivers. Motorbike insurance with point recovery course

How can I recover points?

If you repeatedly commit offences, you may lose all your points and in order to recover your driver’s license you will have to:

  • Wait a minimum of 6 months, or 3 months if you are a professional driver.
  • If you are a repeat offender, the disqualification period will be increased to one year.

Once the disqualification period has elapsed, the following is necessary:

  • Partial recovery: you must complete and pass a 12-hour driver awareness and re-education course.
  • Total recovery: you must complete and pass a 24-hour driver awareness and re-education course.

In both cases, a test must be passed at the Traffic Department to certify that the driver’s awareness and re-education course skills have been acquired.

Línea Directa will pay up to the limit of €500 for the cost of the driver awareness and re-education course, as well as test fees for the recovery of the driving license.

This service is included within the fine management coverage, where we will notify you of any traffic penalties you may have committed and will appeal against the fine on your behalf if necessary.
